Women in pop culture

I'm guilty of loving pop music and pop culture. I can't deny it any longer. I always feel music shamed for enjoying that type of music, but it makes me happy and makes me want to dance. I consume mostly pop music from women because I tend to relate to their message more. An artist I don't listen to is Dua Lipa, but I came across an interview with her and I thought it was interesting. In the interview, Dua Lipa she said she felt like people expect much more from women than men in pop music. It wasn't something I thought about before, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Women in pop music must be diverse artists who can do it all. It's highly praised if you're a triple threat; this can be singing, acting, and dancing. I remember when Dua Lipa was a joke on the internet for trying to dance because of the pressure she felt by her agency. Women have to be forever evolving to stay relevant and interesting, but someone like Ed Sheeran can get away with wearing the same average everyday look for years now. No one would ever expect Ed Sheeran to perform a dance routine and I feel like it would be hard to watch. In the article, she talks about how she got poor reviews for her performances, but men who just sing on stage can get 5-star reviews. I don't think people understand how difficult it is to dance and still sing well. You have to manage your breathing and keep your voice from sounding shakey with your movements.

People also tend to care more about women's love lives than men's in pop culture. I remember when everyone was shaming Taylor Swift for dating multiple men and only writing songs about love. On the other hand, I don't hear anyone talking about who Bruno Mars is involved with. Society keeps a timeline of how fast women move on from past relationships. It's weird how society tells you when it's okay to move on and when it's too soon. Miley Cyrus recently did an interview on a podcast talking about how the media villainized her for moving on from her marriage with Liam Hemsworth. No one truly knows how long a relationship has been over, except the two people in the relationship. In comparison, Justin Beiber moved on from Selena Gomez within a short period of time and I don't think he got as much hate as Miley did from the media. I think women are held up to higher standards than men and it's getting old.

  1. Hey Alycia! The first line of your post actually made me giggle a bit and very relatable, I used to be shamed of my music tastes as well, but now? I don't care want anyone has to say and I'm glad you don't either :) And I don't listen to pop as much, but knowing that women have a higher bar to reach in that industry than men shakes my bones to the core. And that women can't express certain emotions in songs or that get shamed for it, but a man can sing/rap about have multiple lovers. Our society is so Effed up, man

  2. Hello I really liked your blog. I totally agree with your first sentence. I as well felt guilty for liking some pop culture music. Society makes us feel like we are not supposed to enjoy pop culture. I also liked how you mention how women are expected to sing, act, and dance. And men are not expected to dress and dance.

  3. I really love your blog, I think you are spot on talking about how different the industry treats men than women. I think about this a lot when listening to country music. I feel like most the male vocalist in country music have only guitar or drums or a pretty simple beat in it. However, female country singers always have a lot of sounds and harmony and different things happening.

  4. I really like your blog. I completely agree that in the music industry that women are expected to do more things. They are always the ones getting bad press over things that would not be considered as a big deal if men were the ones doing the actions.

  5. I'm here to say that yeah, this happens way too often that the music industry has so many double standards. Women will be shamed for how they act, how they dress, who they talk to, but men just get praised for all of the same things.
